Cold Water Habitat Development for Thermally Marginal Trout Streams
America's trout streams are facing an existential threat. Climate change is exacerbating heatwaves and drought, negatively impacting cold water habitat and pushing many of these ecosystems to the thresholds of survivability for these cherished fish.
This program identities, develops, and evaluates cold-water refugia in thermally-marginal streams. These efforts will generate management-ready data on temperature refugia best practices, supporting both short-term BMP siting and long-term restoration strategies. Results will not only protect the ecological integrity of the rivers of study but will also provide a scalable model for integrating thermal refugia into watershed-based planning and statewide trout management under a changing climate.
Starflower has received support from the University of Michigan, the Upper Peninsula Land Conservancy, the Superior Watershed Partnership, and the Nature Conservancy on behalf of this project.
We can't wait to get to work!
